Will The iPad Change the Course of History?

Reading many of the bloggers, you'd think that the iPad is going to do just about everything. While the thing is definitely cool in some respects, I don't really think that it's worthy of a lot of the hype. Afterall, this is old technology. It's just the iTouch or iPhone made bigger. What's the big deal then? Well, it does seem like it'll compete with the Amazon kindle and as a graphic designer, I like some of the features that it has. I've used some paint/drawing programs on the iPhone and couldn't help thinking that'd it'd be much nicer to have a bigger screen. But still, this isn't really that big of a deal to just throw a bigger screen in an old product doesn't make it that much better. Is there really any chance that this thing is going to do away with laptops and netbooks? I think not. I think that it will be an important product to watch (as pretty much every product from Apple is, but let's not forget what it really is. It's just a new tablet that is not even really independent. In fact, I think for me I'd almost rather get one of the mod-book tablets that are actually real laptops converted for use at tablets rather than a scaled up iTouch. Of course the iPad is currently out of my price range. Maybe in a few revisions when they've halved the price to around $250 bucks and made significant upgrades to the hardware, then I'll consider the iPad a viable option. Otherwise, the iPad for me (and many others) is just another cool but mostly useless gadget on the market. You may find me to be one of the few bloggers out who hasn't litterally drunk the coolaid, but this is really how I feel. The iPad has no real use other that being an ebook reader and an internet browser.

Tech Loaded to Resume Posting

It's been quite a while since I've posted anything on Tech Loaded. It's not that I haven't had an interest in continuing to post technology related blogs, it's just that there has been so many other things going on that I've simply not had much time. Also, it seems like our server was having a few problems interacting with blogger and since that's what our site is based it, in makes it difficult to upkeep if the site is not functioning correctly.

Of course since the last post was in 2009, there has been a lot of things that have happened. There's some cool stuff that has been introduced to the market. Apple's iPad is no longer a tablet rumor but a soon-to-be reality. What does this new "internet appliance" mean for the tech world? It will be really cool to see what kinds of things will come out of the iPad, though so far it seems like not too many pundits are impressed with the iPad at all. But as in the case with the iMac, the iPhone and many other Apple devices, the proof will be in the pudding, or rather in the pool of users. If people like it and it takes off, then it will be a success. If no one buys it and it bombs than it won't be a success. My bets are that it will be a success, since Apple products lately have seemed to constantly knock the cover off the ball. Of course, the success of the iPad will be something that 2010 will reveal. It will also be very interesting to see what the competition will be able to come up with.

Also, this post is being written in Firefox on Windows 7, which in spite of some issues has actually been quite a nice operating system so far and even for a graphic designer, it looks like a solid alternative to Mac. Of course you'll probably definitely understand me when I say it's not perfect, but when you need a 17 inch laptop and are on a budget, buying a Mac is simply out of the question.

Of course lately Google has also managed to get some "buzz" and even a lawsuit. When it comes to privacy, it seems like Google always manages to blow it and end up in some sort of lawsuit. Of course it also doesn't seem like they ever get it either.

New in 2010

With a new year beginning, I think it's a good idea to think about the direction of this blog and how we will be a service to our current readership and increase our readership as well. Of course as the technology world never stands still, this blog will change with the times and demands. Some things I'd like to add in 2010 are tutorials and some scripts and resources for website developers and programmers.

So for all the geek readers out there who are looking for tips and easy ways of getting their websites/blogs to have a better ranking in search engines, etc, this year will be an adventure as we delve further into these types of tutorials.

Snow Leopord: Boring Box

Snow Leopard is cool; at least that's what they say. However, package isn't really that cool. I mean unless you consider a picture of a cat cool. I haven't really gotten a chance to use the OS yet so I will reserve my criticism of the actual software till I get a chance to use it and get it installed on my laptop. Of course the price for it couldn't be much less, which in these trying economic times will definitely help get everyone moved over to the operating system. I'm not exactly sure what Apple stands to benefit from practically giving away the Operating System, though I guess if you look at it from the perspective that there really aren't that many more features in this upgrade then that could be the reason. Of course Apple does seem to be moving further and further away from the software dollar model as their hardware products are almost always the focus. But how will this look from a Microsoft perspective when Windows Vista averages around $250.00 for a single user license? Of course when Google comes out with their Chrome OS next year, that will definitely put a new spin on the market too. Google doesn't seem to charge for any software product, instead creating their products in a way that they can gather much information about the individual and then "organize" that information as is their mission. But I digress; my main reason for writing this was the boring (if not ugly) box that Apple has chosen to ship their software in. Maybe this doesn't bother most people, but as a creative type, I would expect that Apple could do better. But again, when does Apple ever live up to expectations?

Dell Studio 14z: Full Featured Laptop Looks to the Future

The Dell Studio 14z isn't a typical laptop. But it's not a net book either. However, some of the features that it includes (or doesn't include) are very similar to the features that could be found in many net books. For example this laptop has no optical drive. The media card reader has also been nixed. According to PC Mag, the features that aren't there don't seem to be a big deal when you look at some of the technology included in this machine.
In their place, the Studio14z is jam-packed with forward-thinking features, including a fantastic resolution, both DisplayPort and HDMI technologies, and Nvidia's integrated graphics platform. It's the kind of laptop you'll want to take on the road or back to school—that is, if you're ready to leave the past behind.

The Dell Studio 14z will make an excellent computer for anyone who is looking for a net book on steroids. It's processor is powerful and it sounds like a solid system.
