On a notebook that is. Mark Wilson says the following about Running Windows 7 on a laptop computer:
The experience is night and day.
With Aero deactivated (and actually, totally inaccessible after an auto-configuration installation despite screwing with the registry), the Start menu now pops right up (like it should), Firefox takes about 3.5 seconds to open (which is reasonable) and light multitasking is smooth enough. The computer is by no means fast, but it's reasonably functional. And I can use the system without pounding my head against the screen or loading an old OS. Keep in mind, this testing is just with 1GB of memory, not even 2GB.
I for one hope that he's right. I have a 2 year old Mac laptop and a very new Compaq (now HP) laptop and I can honestly say that Windows Vista is much slower than my Mac. Just little things like starting up Firefox, clicking the Start menu and logging in seem to take forever on the Vista machine but are quite prompt on my Macbook Pro.
So here's to hoping that Windows 7 turns out to be another XP. A solid operating system that is advanced for it's time. Please Microsoft, please don't make me switch to Linux completely.
Note: the Gizmodo report was based on netbooks. However, if Windows 7 is this much better in a netbook, I wouldn't be surprised if it was pretty good on a regular laptop too.
