Verizon to have 50-60Mbps Wireless Internet speeds by 2010

Verizon wireless is getting set to start testing this technology, and expects it to launch commercially in the U.S. in 2010. Verizon is calling this technology LTE or Long Term Evolution network, it uses 4G, and it is modeled after there EV-DO 3G network. This network will use the 700MHz wireless spectrum Verizon acquired in the Federal Communications Commission's auction last year. Several GSM operators around the world have also announced plans to use LTE, which means that Verizon 4G wireless subscribers will eventually be able to roam globally.

In its inital trails, Verizon says that it has reached peak download speeds of around 50Mbps-60Mbps. Average download speeds will be much slower since the wireless spectrum is a shared medium, but it will still be much faster than the average speed of Verizon's 3G EV-DO services, which typically runs at 400Kbps-700Kbps.
