Google Eyes Microsoft With Chrome OS

It looks like Apple and Microsoft are not the only ones in the operating system business anymore. (Yes, I'm ignoring Linux. It doesn't count). Google is going to go ahead and try to build an operating system. Of course there are concerns of what Google might be up to when it builds an operating system. But as anyone who has used Google products would know, they do build very innovative products at great prices (free pretty much).

"Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the Web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small Netbooks to full-size desktop systems," Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, engineering director, said in the blog post.

What would a Google operating system look/act like? If current product offerings are any indication (note Google desktop and the Chrome browser), a Google operating system would actually be pretty slick. Of course if they do name it "Chrome" as has been reported, we would expect a snazzy cool interface. I'm not sure how it will make a person's life easier, but to have a laptop that is built on the premise of "organizing the world's information" as Google's mission states, one would expect Google's key feature (the search) to be integral in the OS. Maybe instead of a start men, the Search field? Such a concept could be quite powerful.

Of course it remains to be seen if Google could actually compete with Microsoft that has established itself as the leader in Operating Systems. I doubt that they will be taken out of their throne as the king of the OS, but if anyone could do it it would be Google.
